GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ) – As the early kickoff to National Police Week, a special vigil will be held Thursday evening to remember a special group of officers.
A candlelight Vigil at the Appleton Alliance Church in Grand Chute is an opportunity to remember the officers that paid the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives in the line of duty in service to their communities.
“To honor those officers who in 2018 did make that ultimate sacrifice. They are heroes in their communities and they are gone but they will never be forgotten.”
Grand Chute Police Chief Greg Peterson says each year the evening hits close to home for officers and their families.
“In 2018, we lost 158 officers in the line of duty. You see a number and it is just a number until you start reading those names.”
The vigil runs from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Guest speakers include Outagamie County Sheriff Clint Kriewaldt and Fox Crossing Officer Seely Moe, the officer who was involved in a shooting last year on the Trestle Trail.
Events including a brat fry and a flag raising are planned in the Valley for next week’s National Police Officer Week.
