APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The City of Appleton could soon have names for more than 20 of its alleyways. City planners are recommending historical names.
“We have picked out a lot of lost street names,” said Gwen Sargeant, the Vice President of Appleton Historical Society.
“Rork is one of those names, “Hyde”, “Buck”, there’s “DeForest”. A majority of names are street names that we’re trying to bring back.”
Sargeant tells FOX 11 she’s is helping city planners come up with the proposed names.
“Most of the names are based on early Appleton pioneers and they’re originally owned land and they lived here.”
She said the long alleyway that runs from Memorial to Lawrence University would be named Kimball if the common council approves.
“Kimball is actually like a female pioneer, she’s probably the reason why Appleton is called Appleton.”
Besides the historical significance, Sargeant said it’ll alleviate confusion for fire and police personnel.
“Sometimes they’re trying to use other streets around them, so it just makes it more difficult.”
Sargeant said the proposed names are currently held at the Planning Commission Committee.
Three of the recommended alley names, Kimball, Allen, and Oak, would replace the streets that will be lost as part of the U-S Venture development.
