OCONTO, WI (WTAQ) – The city of Oconto is receiving a warning from the DNR about pumping sewage into the river.
The state DNR says it will notice a “notice of noncompliance” to Oconto after they pumped sewage directly into the Oconto River last week, bypassing the treatment facility.
The city says they did this to prevent backups into homes and businesses.
But, DNR’s Nicole Krueger says that “overflows are prohibited.”
For now, the city is just receiving a notice since they haven’t had the problem before.
“Should this continue to happen, more enforcement would be taken which may lead to fines,” says Krueger.
