BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – Improvements could be on the way for a local boat launch and fishing dock area.
Right now, there are three developed launch sites in Brown County, which include the Suamico Boat Landing on the west shore, the Green Bay Metro Boat Launch at the mouth of the Fox River, and Bay Shore County Park on the eastern side of the bay.
Another site, at the old Eagles Nest Supper Club and Marina on Green Bay’s northeast side, is being looked at by county leaders.
At Brown County’s Bay Shore Park, there is work to be done, according to Parks Director Matt Kriese.
“The top of the breakwater is not ADA accessible anymore,” says Kriese. “It’s very uneven, and almost unmaneuverable for those shore-fishing people.”
Adding to the trouble is a steel and concrete-covered walkway at the end of the harbor that is closed.
“It’s slumping in, and the material that’s making up that jetty is essentially washing away,” explains Kriese.
The department has already determined some specific improvements they’d like to usher in for the area.
“We want to see fish-cleaning stations, we need expanded parking for the boat landing,” he says.
An opportunity to expand recreational opportunities for people on the waters of Green Bay could exist about eight miles down the shoreline, as the former Eagles Nest Supper Club is for sale.
It was formerly used as a marina and restaurant-supper club type of venue,” says Kriese. “So it’s approximately four and a half acres and some of that infrastructure is in place already,” says Kriese.
A Brown County Board resolution has given Kriese the OK to apply for grants, and look for other ways to pay for the project, if a deal is reached.
While county hired engineers are looking at improvement options for Bay Shore Park.
A public planning is scheduled for May 7th at the Neville Public Museum in Green Bay, which will run from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
“To determine the highest and best uses of the park,” he explains. “So we can then design this park’s future needs, for the next 20, 30, 50 years from now.”
Bay Shore County Park’s campground opens Saturday, April 20.
