APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – One Green Bay woman is going the extra mile for K-9 officer Pyro.
“I felt like we had potentially lost a local officer,” said Karinda Jennings. “I think what they do is immeasurable for our community.”
Jennings says the situation also hits home because she owns a German Shepard herself.
She said she wanted to find a way to give people a chance to give, even if they don’t have money.
“I basically just made the Facebook event called letters for Pyro and I just shared it with all my friends,” she explained.
Letters for Pyro is a public event on social media, and encourages people to drop off letters, treats and toys at the Green Bay Police station.
She says that effort is reaching people nationwide.
“Illinois, Colorado, California, a bunch of different places across the country that are actually sending in stuff,” said Jennings.
Regardless of how big or small, she says anyone can lend a helping hand.
“I think people get stuck in the I’m just one person I can’t make a difference but you really can and every single person can do just a little bit to help,” Jennings said.
Pyro is recovering from his injuries after being stabbed in the neck three times responding to a call last week.
Police Chief Andrew Smith says even though officers are cautiously optimistic, Pyro has a long way to go.
