MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) – Manitowoc Police are saying that 35-year-old Karl Hess was motivated by theft in a double murder shooting.
Hess allegedly shot 51-year-old Richard Miller, a friend of his, and his 19-year-old daughter, Jocelyn Miller, inside their home this past September.
Hess has told police that he shot the teenager despite her begging for her life.
He was in court Thursday for a bond hearing, which was set at $1 million cash.
At this time, Hess has not been formally charged.
According to a probable cause affidavit, detectives interviewed Hess earlier this week.
“Hess admitted during the time period this event happened that he was having significant financial difficulties. Hess admitted he was aware that Richard had a large amount of cash kept at his residence. Hess admitted to waiting until Richard’s company that night left the Miller residence. Hess admitted to concealing and using a 9mm Taurus semi-automatic handgun at their residence.”
The probable cause affidavit continues to say:
“Hess admitted to entering Richard’s bathroom and putting on gloves to reduce the amount of DNA evidence to be left behind. Hess admitted to exiting the bathroom, pointing the gun and shooting Richard (2) times in the head. Hess admitted to next hearing a noise coming from Jocelyn’s bedroom and suspected that she was home. Hess then entered her bedroom, saw Jocelyn hiding under the comforter and her crying “No.” Hess then told her to “Be Quiet” and shot her (1) time in the area that he thought was her head,” the report states.
A video of Hess carrying a safe was captured by security cameras and he admits to taking a safe, Jocelyn’s cell phone, and Miller’s wallet.
“Hess admitted that he knew what he did was wrong,” the report states.
He is due back in court on Monday and police are requesting two counts of first-degree intentional homicide.
