GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – In the aftermath of flooding, the City of Green Bay will be providing curbside pickup for waste from homes impacted by the East River waters.
The bulk waste collection will run for the affected flood zone areas until the end of the day on Friday, April 5.
A map of the flood zones can be found here.
Green Bay Public Works Director, Steve Grenier, says this is a rare offer, which they have determined necessary to keep city curbs from overflowing.
“We don’t want the city looking like a garbage heap, so we’re going to go out there and we’re going to help these folks out for the next couple of weeks,” he explains.
He says crews were out Monday and already there’s a laundry list of items that are piling up outside of people’s homes.
“A lot of furniture, some office furniture,” he says. “We are starting to see some carpeting, some drywall, things like that.”
The department will also be picking-up items that typically would cost homeowners some money.
“Normally we would charge for T.V.’s,” says Grenier. “We’re hoping folks use some discretion and only put it out if it truly has been damaged, but if it’s out there we’re going to grab it.”
While other items, which they wouldn’t take in any other curbside pick-up situation, aren’t being accepted this go-around either.
“Anything that’s hazardous waste, we may end up having a conversation,” explains Grenier. “We don’t want L.P. tanks and things that you’re not allowed to throw away anyways.”
While if it’s more convenient for any resident in the flood zone to bring their items directly to the department, they have that option available.
“If they just want to get it done quicker than we can get there, they have that opportunity to go to the drop-off centers,” he says. “We do suggest that they bring along some sort of documentation showing that they’re bringing it from a house in that flood area.”
The dropoff sites are located on Redwood Drive and Deckner Avenue.
They are open Monday thru Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the second and third Saturdays of each month from 7 a.m. until noon.
The village of Allouez is also scheduling a curbside bulk waste collection for flood victims.
Their efforts will last until the end of the workday on March 29.
On the village’s Facebook page they have a map of the flood zone posted.
Items for pickup should be placed by residence in an open area of the terrace away from trees, posts, and mailboxes.
They also should utilize regular plastic bags or boxes for smaller items.
It’s illegal in the village to take any waste set out for collection from private property without permission of the owner, lessee, or occupant.
The village warns that flood-damaged items may be contaminated.
