SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) – Police spent extra time around Shawano Schools Friday after the district received information of a shooting threat via Snapchat.
Police Chief Dan Mauel says because it was made on social media, the investigation is more widespread.
“It was unique because I don’t believe we had one through Snapchat in our district before.”
He says with some of the language used and the account owner, they were able to determine that it was not a credible threat.
“We also want to eliminate the fears of the parents and the school district, but we don’t say the threat is not creditable lightly.”
He says they use their training, knowledge, and tools to make a careful assessment, and listing the threat as not credible is not a way to ignore the threat.
Mauel did say that being done through Snapchat does not guarantee that the threat was made locally, or even referred to the Shawano School District.
Still, he says police make every effort to fully investigate and continue to take efforts to protect students and staff in schools.
