SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) – Shawano Emergency Officials are keeping a close eye on rain and melting snow.
Being surrounded by bodies of water, Shawano County joins the rest of the state on a Flood Watch.
Shawano County Emergency Management Director James Davel says lots of snow in February and quick March melting may cause some issues in the near future.
“The concern is given the amount of snow that we had in February, we are really putting about four inches of water in our system.”
Davel says right now, there is no need to panic or take action.
He says clearing storm drains around homes can help the water move, but ice on the water is still a factor in the big picture.
“Given the system is not free-flowing right now with the ice, that causes some concern.”
Davel says to prevent flooding in the home, it is also important for people to check their gutters and make sure their downspouts are emptying out away from the house.
He says the recent warm up is melting the ice on Shawano Lake quickly.
