SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) – Permanent ice shanties on Shawano Lake need to be removed by Sunday.
The DNR says this year however, they have received numerous complaints, that owners can’t get to their shanty’s or even move them due to the cold and snow.
Clark Delzer, DNR Warden says this winter has been different than previous years.
“It is the inaccessible lake itself. We are looking at anywhere between two to three feet of snow across the lake and unless these guys have plows on their trucks or snowmobiles, they are not going to be able to get to those shanties.
Because of that, the DNR will be offering some leniency for those who can’t move their shanties.
Delzer says it will still up to the DNR’s discretion.
“This is not a get out of jail free card. As soon as they can safely get their shanty off the ice, the better.”
For some, Delzer says the shanty is frozen right to the ice.
“A good recommendation is to bring your chipper or chainsaw. We generally try to discourage cutting large holes in the ice because that can be a safety hazard for snowmobilers.”
The first Sunday after the closure of the game fish season is when they need to be removed each year.
Pop-up shanties will be allowed for the rest of the ice fishing season, but need to be removed each night.
