Keith Johnson is among the 52 Northeast Wisconsin veterans currently on the Return to 'Nam Old Glory Honor Flight. While in the Mekong Delta, Keith was able to honor the wishes of his brother Duane who served in the region.
Old Glory Honor Flight tells the story in a Facebook post:
“We were all honored, deeply moved and thankful to take part in a traditional Vietnamese burial ceremony for Duane Johnson. Duane is the oldest brother of one of our Return to Nam veterans, Keith Johnson… Keith and Duane have a younger brother who also served in Vietnam.
Duane traveled the world after serving his country and of all the places he had visited, it was Vietnam he most wanted to return to. Duane never made it back to Vietnam so his children asked Keith to bring some of his ashes to lay to rest in the Mekong Delta, where he had served.
Each of our veterans were given a special challenge coin to leave in Vietnam where or with someone that has meaning to them. As we watched Keith release Duane’s ashes they were quietly carried by a gentle breeze to lay to rest in the Delta… Keith then left his coin for his beloved brother and turned to the open and comforting arms of his fellow comrades.
Rest In Peace Duane and welcome home.”
