GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Patrick Buckley remains in the race or Green Bay’s next Mayor.
It was a late come from behind win for Buckley as he edged Pat Evans by less than 100 votes to finish second in Tuesday night’s Mayoral Primary.
As the results were coming in, Buckley was watching his son play hockey, which described his night in nutshell.
Buckley’s son plays for Notre Dame and the Tritons were able to keep their season alive by coming from behind to beat Bay Port to advance to the Sectional Finals.
“At the same time Notre Dame scored the winning goal, I found out I finished second in the primary,” Buckley said. “It was a come from behind win on both sides.
Buckley says he believes his experience holding multiple positions in the city of Green Bay was a difference maker.
“I think going forward that’s what the voters will look at. That is what they looked at in this election and that is what they will look at again.”
Buckley lost the overall vote to Representative Eric Genrich by nearly 3,000 votes but does not consider himself an underdog going forward in the campaign against Genrich.
“I think we are looking at a whole new race now. It gives us a chance to focus in on Eric and myself and really get down to some of the issues that are facing the residents of Green Bay.”
Buckley says his experience and understanding of the city helped him in the first race and believes it will help him moving forward.
He says during the campaign he used his experience as a police officer in Green Bay, and his experience in elected positions to get his message across to the voters.
“This position of Mayor can’t be about a job or someone looking to advance their political career.”
Buckley says there is ground to make up, but voters only having two messages to hear instead of eight will make it easier for them to compare the candidates.
“This Mayor needs to take the city and make it the best place to live, work and retire.”
