SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ) – Two people are dead following an overnight shooting in Suamico.
The shooting happened early this morning around 2:30 a.m. on the 2000 block of Mystic Hills Terrace in the Village of Suamico.
Lt. Jason McAuly of the Brown County Sheriff’s Department says the public is not in danger.
The suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Sebastian Dershon Royal of Milwaukee. He was found deceased upon arrival by what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
34-year-old Brooke Fontaine of Suamico has been identified as the victim. She was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital this morning.
“Where despite the best efforts of EMTs and ER staff she succumbed to her injuries shortly before 7 a.m. this morning,” explains Captain David Poteat with the Investigative Division of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office.
Captain Poteat gave further insight into the relationship between Fontaine and Royal.
“Brooke had two children, a four-year-old from another relationship and fourteen-month-old that she had with Mr. Royal,” he says. “Brooke and Mr. Royal had been involved in a custody dispute, which was ongoing in Outagamie County.”
After Royal failed to appear for a court hearing in January a bench warrant was issued for him.
“Immediately prior to the shooting Mr. Royal recorded an apology, an explanation for his son, via Facebook Live,” says Captain Poteat. “Mr. Royal said he was going to quote, ‘do what was fair.’”
Royal fired multiple rounds into the bedroom of the 4-year-old after arriving at the residence.
Fontaine’s mother was sleeping in that room and covered the child after the shooting began.
“And then Brooke came into the room, came up to the window, saw Mr. Royal, again yelling at him to stop, and she was shot in the head,” he explains.
Moments after that Royal took his own life.
An investigation will continue at the scene Monday afternoon.
