KIMBERLY, WI (WTAQ) – Three adults who got into a verbal and physical altercation at youth wrestling tournament February 3 have been issued municipal citations.
“I think we need to tow that line and let people know that if this is how you are going to choose to behave at community events, there will be consequences.”
Lieutenant Mark Wery of the Fox Valley Metro Police Department says the altercation started while the spectators were watching a youth wrestling match matside.
“It was parents in attendance witnessing their kid’s wrestling and the altercation resulted from what was transpiring during the match,” Wery said. “They allowed it to become bigger than themselves and lost sight on what was important and the focus was pulled from the kids and turned to each other.”
33-year-old Cassandra Hamil of Green Bay, 39-year-old Shannon Volkman and 33-year-old Nicole Volkman of Shiocton were all cited with disorderly conduct.
The Shannon and Nicole Volkman were both also cited for battery.
Video taken from the event shows an adult female shouting at another adult female and a male lunging towards that same woman that was being shouted at.
Other fans in the area of the altercation were able to pull the male and female away from each other, but the two females then tackled each other on the mat before they were separated from each other.
“It created quite a disturbance and ultimately resulted in the tournament action being halted for a short period of time.”
Wery says there were some minor injuries sustained by some of the participants.
The event stands alone from the Kimberly School District and is not sponsored by the district.
All three were escorted from the facility after the altercation.
“I don’t think anyone out there would say this is appropriate at this kind of event and it is not setting a good example that we are setting for the kids or other spectators and it is just something that we are not going to have at one of our community events.”
