GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A number of recent inclement weather days has forced the Green Bay Area Public School District to make a series of changes to their school calendar going forward.
February 22 and April 5, which were previously early release days, are now going to be full school days.
“We have to think about the impact of student learning and the impact that it has on our families.”
Associate Superintendent John Magas says that is why for now they are avoiding tacking on days to the end of the year.
Instead, the school district will be adding five minutes to the beginning of each school day and ten minutes to the end of each day for the remainder of the school year, starting on Monday, February 25.
“We felt that adding minutes to the end of the day makes a big difference as far as our students being engaged.”
They also have announced a number of plans for possible future school cancellations or delays.
The scheduled early release on May 17 will be changed to a full school day if a 2-hour delay or weather-related early release is needed.
“We decided that we would keep that for now as a professional learning opportunity for staff,” Magas said.
The time added to each school day is about the maximum that can be added without disrupting too many schedules.
Depending on the additional number of days needed the school year would then need to be extended to June 10 or later.
