GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Road crews have been working hard to keep the streets clear for the past week, but a drastic change in temperature has created some extra problems.
Chris Pirlot, the Operations Director for Green Bay’s Department of Public Works tells FOX 11 crews have also been busy filling potholes.
“All roads will ultimately need pothole patching, crack filling, but when we get into the winter time and now February, we start seeing that we have to address decaying roadway surfaces.”
In freezing temperatures potholes usually develop when water seeps under the ground and starts to expand, it then causes the pavement to crack and raise in several places.
“Part of the biggest concerns we’ve had with road conditions other than ice and slippery spots, some of our older roadways that are coming up for repairs are constantly needing to be maintained.”.
When it comes to state highways and county roads, Mark Kantola with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation said it’s doing the same.
“We have a fully staffed maintenance department at the DOT that works with the different counties to make sure maintenance on the roads is done in a certain amount of time. If you see a pothole on a state highway you can call the county highway department and report it straight to the department and we can schedule it to be fixed.”
Pirlot says repairs this time of the year are usually a temporary fix, and will be taken care of again come spring.
“We just ask that if motorist see them and they will cause damage to vehicles that you report them if we haven’t found them ourselves already.”
