MARINETTE, WI (WRN) – A Marinette maker of firefighting foam knew it was polluting groundwater at least four years before it began providing bottled water to residents and was ordered by the DNR to investigate the contamination.
The Journal Sentinel reports state records show Tyco Fire Products had test results showing soil and well contamination dating back to October 2013.
Perfluorinated chemicals, a concern for human health, were detected.
But it wasn’t until November 2017 that Tyco said the chemicals had spread outside its Marinette facility, which has been in operation since the early 1960s.
A DNR staffer overseeing the cleanup said that information ought to have been reported immediately.
Tyco said it is providing bottled water to 121 properties and has installed 37 water treatment systems in Marinette.
