GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – 29-year-old Elisha Varguez was charged with first-degree reckless injury on Monday in Brown County court.
Varguez accidentally shot herself and another man after fighting with him over a gun on Saturday.
She had grabbed his gun and didn’t want the man to know she had it, according to the complaint.
“She stated that Ronald got on top of her and was trying to take the gun away from her to unload it. She stated that there was a short struggle for the gun and she accidentally pulled the trigger causing the gunshot wounds on her and Ronald,” states the criminal complaint.
Both the gunshot wounds are non-life threatening, as she was shot in the abdomen and he was shot in the foot with the single shot.
“Still, obviously, very concerning when people are tugging on a weapon and it goes off,” says Captain Jeremy Muraski with the Green Bay Police Department. “Obviously, the injuries could’ve been much more worse or even fatal, so we’re breathing a little sigh of relief that the injuries weren’t more substantial.”
The complaint goes on to state that Varguez told police, “she did pull the trigger on the handgun, but this time the gun fired and Varguez stated that she thought the safety had been taken off during the struggle… Varguez stated that she wasn’t sure why she pulled the trigger.”
