CLINTONVILLE, WI (WTAQ) – The frigid temperatures can be hard on vehicles if they are not properly maintained.
Josh Yagow, Service Manager at Klein’s Auto in Clintonville says that starts with getting your battery tested and replaced if needed.
“We have a lot of battery issues come in when it gets cold.
He says it is better to be safe than sorry.
“Even though your car may start just fine, it may be just cold enough to push it over the edge of its life where it will be okay one second but not the next.”
He says another thing that can get overlooked is the importance of antifreeze.
“If it hasn’t been changed out, it should be changed out every five years on a vehicle.”
Yagow says it is recommended to check your windshield washer fluid and make sure it mixed with antifreeze.
He also noted that you can never go wrong with plugging your car in when not in use.
“For those people who have a block heater, it would be a good idea to plug them in especially if they have a diesel truck.”
As far as making sure your car is filled up, Yagow says that is not as crucial as it used to be.
“The fuel has gotten a lot better in recent years and what used to happen was that the water in the fuel would create a problem.”
It is also advised to have your fuel at or above a quarter tank during this cold period.
He says you should also avoid any car washes during this weather and make sure you are packed with things you need just in case you do get stranded.
