OCONTO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – An Oconto County man is now facing reckless homicide charges following a fatal crash that killed a teen.
18-year-old Cade Wied is being charged with five counts, including second-degree reckless homicide, reckless injury, and knowingly operating a vehicle with a suspended license following the December 14 crash in the town of Abrams, which killed a 14-year-old girl, identified at the time as September Deneys.
The vehicle left the roadway and struck two trees before coming to rest, according to the criminal complaint. Wied says he was driving about 55 miles per hour, but the speed limit in that area was 45 miles per hour. The vehicle was actually traveling about 88 miles per hour, according to data that was recovered from the car.
Wied admitted he was driving the night of the crash, but in an interview a few days later he claimed the girl who died was actually the driver. Another passenger claims that Wied was driving, according to the complaint.
At his initial appearance in Oconto County court on Monday a $25,000 cash bond was set and he will return to court on February 22 for a preliminary hearing, according to the Clerk of Courts.
