GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Some of the coldest temperatures in years will be hitting Wisconsin this week along with a lot of snow.
The heavy snows that started Sunday night are expected to continue through this evening, with up to a foot of snow expected in some areas.
Fox 11’s Meteorologist Pete Petoniak says that’s on top of some pretty good winds as well.
“when it’s snowing, and you have those winds so strong, it’s near blizzard conditions.”
After that, blistering cold temperatures are expected to last through this entire week, with temperatures double digits below zero.
“Approaching 50 below zero on Wednesday morning and Thursday morning.”
Petoniak says that’s record-breaking kind of stuff. We haven’t had wind chills like that in 20 years.
The important thing to keep in mind is how dangerous that type of weather situation is.
“you can get frostbite on exposed skin if you don’t have your gloves on if you don’t have your hat on….within 10 minutes.”
He says it’s best to follow the lead of so many schools, businesses and activities today.
“If you don’t have to be on the roads it’s a good idea to stay in.”
Ironically, Petoniak says the forecast will take an about-face by the end of the week, at least temperature wise.
The thermometer expected to climb back into the mid-’30s, maybe even hit 40, by next weekend.
