DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – As many of you look for ways to keep your home warm over the next few weeks, there are some things you should keep in mind.
First responders and utility companies say gas or carbon monoxide leaks are common in winter and regular maintenance to your home’s heating system can lower your chances for having one.
“A couple of different precautions homeowners should take. With your furnace make sure it’s clear of dust, dirt and debris. That will allow your furnace to run efficiently as possible especially during this colder than normal weather,” said Matt Cullen from Wisconsin Public Service. “Especially with the recent snowfall its important to make sure your meters and appliances are clear of ice and snow, a build up could potentially cause a natural gas leak,” he explained.
Lt. Dan Gatz with the De Pere Fire Department said instances like this are being responded to at least two to three times a week.
“We see an increase in the beginning of winter when they start their furnace. But even with the cold people are starting their cars in their garage and you want to make sure you’re pulling them outside so that extra carbon monoxide doesn’t go into the house,” said Gatz.
Carbon monoxide is an odorless poisonous gas. It can’t be seen or tasted, but is often produced from heaters, stoves, and even fireplaces.
Lt. Gatz said that’s why it’s important to use a safe source for heat, to avoid being exposed to carbon monoxide poisoning.
“A propane heater you won’t want to use indoors cause that’s going to give off that carbon monoxide. If you are going to use electric heaters and blankets be aware and use them at a minimal use,” he said.
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include headaches, dizziness, sickness, and blurred vision.
If you detect a leak in your home, experts say you should get outside and call 911 immediately.
