FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) – Heavy snowfall throughout the Fox Valley on Wednesday had residents and city employees busy keeping driveways, sidewalks, and roads clear.
An average of four to seven inches fell throughout southern parts of the Fox Valley, which made snow-blowers a hot commodity in most neighborhoods.
Fond du Lac resident Dan McLain saw that as an opportunity to get some exercise done.
“I’m enjoying this beautiful winter day,” McLain says. “Actually, I have both wheels locked in on the snow blower, so they’re turning together, so when you turn a corner you really have to push.”
And why just limit yourself to clearing one driveway?
“I mean, he usually does the next lady’s and usually always does mine,” says Fond du Lac resident Ruth Lacoviello.
Keeping the driveway clean can also turn into a friendly rivalry.
“Sometimes I get out late at night so I beat him out here,” says Lacoviello.
Jordan Skiff, Fond du Lac City Public Works Director, is tasked with not just keeping a driveway clear, but all the towns roads.
He says the past 24-hours have been a challenge.
“It’s an unusual storm in that, in between snow falling overnight and then continuing more heavily this morning,” says Skiff.
Luckily, he has some help available.
“Today we have an ‘all-out-plow’, we call it, typically about 20 trucks that we get out, with various plow trucks and loaders and smaller pick-up trucks,” he explains.
He adds that their work isn’t done yet.
“With an event like this, I would anticipate us coming in at some point overnight, whether it’s this week or early next week to do actual removals of snow from the downtown area and a couple other major roadways that don’t have terraces,” explains Skiff.
