APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – The American Cancer Society is working with ThedaCare to help those with cancer get to treatment.
“I would say it is our best-kept secret.”
It’s called The Road To Recovery Transportation program, and volunteers are needed.
“Always looking for volunteers that would be willing to be that driver that would take a patient to and from treatment.”
Kim Kinner of the American Cancer Society says helping others and flexible hours may be the perfect fit.
“You have a great driving record and you are looking to help someone and you have got some time, this is a great opportunity to volunteer with us.”
Kinner adds that sometimes the drivers have a personal connection to cancer. To volunteer, drivers need to have a clear background check, adaquate insurance, a license, access to a computer and the ability to drive at their convenience.
“You can actually pick and chose the time that you would be available.”
There is also a training course that volunteers need to complete.
Once accepted, drivers choose when and where they can drive and fill out a schedule online.
Those interested should visit www.cancer.org/roadtorecovery and complete the sign-up form.
