GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Green Bay Packers continue working on bringing a “non-football” event to Lambeau Field for next spring.
The Green Bay-Brown County Professional Football Stadium District met in closed session for 43 minutes Tuesday afternoon to discuss the event.
Through its special events and economic development fund, as well as its ticket tax revenue, the stadium district board can offer financial incentives for events, such as a rebate on the ticket tax to the promoter.
During part of the closed session of the meeting, the district board met with Packers Director of Public Affairs Aaron Popkey about the terms of the contract.
The board gave its director the authority to continue negotiating with the Packers and approved the deal within certain parameters, which were not disclosed.
The board, which meets next in December, does not need to vote again if the deal is within those guidelines.
Popkey would not name the event but did say it would be held next spring.
The team has a window from mid-May to mid-June during which it is willing to host events on the field but still allow recovery and repair time before football season starts.
Speculation of a Paul McCartney tour stop in Green Bay has circulated since September when McCartney’s official Facebook page posted a sponsored advertisement teasing to the possibility.
The ad reads, “Green Bay! Tour dates could be announced really soon! Tour laminates now available for a limited time. Each laminate comes with a code that could allow access to presales for yet to be announced dates.”
McCartney’s “Freshen Up” tour is scheduled to stop in Madison June 6. That show is already sold out.
Tuesday’s meeting was the special session at the request of the Packers, because of the timing needed by the event to finalize details, Popkey said.
Popkey would not speculate, however, as to when an announcement could be made.
Kenny Chesney, Billy Joel, Jason Aldean, and the Zac Brown Band have performed at Lambeau Field in recent years. The stadium also hosted a college football game between Wisconsin and LSU in 2016.
The next publicly announced special event is the game between Wisconsin and Notre Dame on Oct. 2, 2020.
