GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A Nation-Wide Vigil and Service Project in honor of the Girl Scouts who died Saturday in Chippewa Falls was started in Green Bay.
Girl Scouts from all around the country will join for a moment of silence Saturday to remember the three girl scouts and a mother killed by an impaired driver while doing roadwork for a service project.
“I was getting tons of messages from parents who were saying we really need to do something for these people.”
Elizabeth Steffel, a Troop Leader in Green Bay says it was an activity that they were going to do locally, and it spread fast.
“I was getting requests from people all around the county asking to join in and it soon became the beast that it is where I have over 4,000 people asking to be in this.”
The event has turned international as Troops in Canada and Italy are also participating.
“All I could think about is if that would have happened to my troops or my daughter, how alone and scary that would be.”
In Green Bay, a vigil will be held at the Brown County Courthouse at 3 pm on Saturday.
Steffel says it is a way to let the families know that people are thinking of them and to teach girl scouts a life-changing lesson.
“There are Girl Scouts who are in pain and we need to help them somehow.”
Steffel says they are also turning this into an educational experience.
“A leader from a different troop had the idea of making a badge or a patch.”
Steffel says they are creating a badge that girls will earn for doing service projects in honor of the girls killed.
Steffel says it is a way to let the families know that people are thinking of them and to teach girl scouts a life-changing lesson on the importance of helping those in need.
“We just want to help those girls, we just want to help those girls families, that is all we care about.”
She says while it is the driver that is to blame for making a decision to drive impaired, it also goes to show that every decision has a consequence.
All proceeds from the badges will be given to the families.
This badge fundraiser for the families was organized by Girl Scout Troop 4029 in Green Bay.
All Proceeds will be sent to a bank account that was set up for the families.CCF Bank2727 Commercial BoulevardLake Hallie, WI 54729And checks were written to GS troop 3055 Benefit
