GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – One man is dead after a Green Bay Police officer fired a fatal shot during an incident Friday night inside the Brown County Jail’s sally port, where individuals are brought in to be booked into the jail.
Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith held a news brief0ing today to confirm a man, in his 20s, arrested during a traffic stop earlier Friday evening had been fatally shot during the officer involved shooting.
Officers with the state’s Department of Criminal Investigation in Madison arrived during the early morning hours Saturday to conduct an investigation into the shootiing.
Smith said at least two officer were placed on administrative leave while the investigation is being conducted.
They were expected to be interviewed in the coming days.
Smith indicated it was protocol to interview officers 48 hours after an incident to allow for better recollection. (The officer are permitted to review reports and any available video or audio recordings prior to the interview, Chief Smith misspoke to that fact during the briefing.)
The suspect, along with a female passenger in his car, was stopped in the 300-block of Main Street in Green Bay around 7:30 pm.
Both individuals had outstanding warrants for their arrest, according to Smith.
The female was transported separately and booked into the jail without incident.
Details surrounding the shooting and what led up to the shooting remain under investigation by DCI.
Smith said, “Multiple officers were present when this incident occurred.”
There’s a 48 hour delay for the significantly involved officers to be interviewed, which is a standard protocol.
Evidence from the scene will be processed by the state crime lab.
