MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Three Manitowoc organizations spent part of the weekend raising awareness about the struggles faced by those who are homeless.
The Haven homeless shelter for men, Hope House and Habitat for Humanity came together to turn the parking lot of ‘The Haven’ into a ‘cardboard city’ from Saturday night until Sunday morning.
Thirty youth and adults from the community brought cardboard boxes and tents to sleep in, while some are sleeping in their cars.
Temperatures were in the low forties Saturday night, but they say it’s part of the experience.
“Participants get the chance to experience what it is to be homeless. And mind you this is only for one night,” said Jean Wakefield, Manitowoc Habitat for Humanity’s executive director.
The Haven executive director Michael Etheridge tells FOX 11….
“We want to bear the elements and really get the experience of what its like for one night to go through it.”
People started arriving around 4:30 Saturday evening.
Activities like games and karaoke helped them pass the time.
