KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ) – Jake’s Diapers in Kaukauna is once again collecting to donate.
Executive Director and Founder Stephanie Bowers says volunteers packed diapers and feminine products to be shipped to North Carolina to help families affected by Hurricane Florence.
“We packed about 200 diaper kits, which will diaper a child from birth through potty training.”
Along with diapers, teams also packed feminine hygiene products.
Bowers says their focus is on residents in Lumberton, North Carolina, an area hit hard by Hurricane Florence.
“Forty percent of all families in Lumberton live below the poverty level.”
She says in a time of disaster, people tend to think of food, clothing, shelter, and water, but diapers are commonly forgotten.
“Federal disaster relief programs do not cover diapers. WIC and food stamps do not allow for diapers, so when you have families in poverty no amplified by disaster, it is a desperate situation.”
“If you don’t have diapers for your child, your child cannot go to childcare, Bowers said. “If your child can’t go to childcare, you can’t go to work.”
In addition, Johnson & Johnson, through its crowdfunding site Caring Crowd, is doubling all individual donations to Jake’s Diapers during the emergency.
There are still opportunities to volunteer and donate. You can learn more at www.jakesdiapers.org.
Jakes Diapers also continues to send cloth diapers to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria devastated the island a year ago.
