GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Many of us at least paused for a moment to think about the events of 9-11, 2001. But the future of the Green Bay memorial to that dark day in U-S history seems to be stalled.
The beam from the World Trade Center is housed in Green Bay Police headquarters.
The rest of the memorial, on the west side of the Nitschke bridge, features inaccurate facts and deteriorating condition.
“Currently the plan is to fix it up, to remove the granite, replace it with better outdoor granite, re-engrave it and get the right information on it.”
But Alderman Randy Scannell says that doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon. The group that’s raising the estimated $75 thousand isn’t well organized at this time.
“I’m very frustrated that it’s taken this long to get this far and we’ve got a long way to go yet.”
He says it could take at least another year to get the money together.
“It’s very unfortunate the state that monument is in.”
If the effort falls through Scannell says the city’s 9-11 Memorial could eventually wind up in a future police-fire headquarters.
