MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) – A 22-year-old man is in custody after he was confronted by neighbors while he was breaking into a car.
Manitowoc Police say, people, in the 1200 block of S. 13th Street, called them early this morning (MONDAY) after seeing a suspicious male in their driveway and their car alarms were going off.
Police say the man had several items, which they believe were possibly stolen.
The suspect is being held in the Manitowoc County jail, facing several charges.
The police department is reminding citizens to lock their homes and vehicles.
“It’s just a general rule of thumb that we would encourage everyone to lock their stuff up,” says Manitowoc Sargent Andrew Trilling.
But one thing police don’t want people to do is to personally confront the bad guys.
“One never knows if someone is doing something against the law or illegal if they’re in a certain state of mind or have some type of weapons,” says Sargent Trilling.
Instead, the police encourage individuals to stay physically removed from the situation, but to remain alert.
“If they see something in their neighborhood that seems suspicious or out of line we always encourage people to call the police department and see if an officer can respond and see what’s going on,” explains Trilling.
Anyone with possible information regarding a recent string of thefts in Manitowoc is strongly encouraged to call the Manitowoc Police Department or Cime Stoppers, where they can remain anonymous.
