GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – EAA Airventure is making for cluttered skies above Oshkosh, but surrounding airports are seeing their runways packed as well.
Local airports, such as Austin Straubel in Green Bay, are seeing increased traffic says GRB Airport Director Marty Piette.
“And this year, 2018, has probably been the busiest year we’ve seen in probably 3 or 4 years in terms of aircraft coming in,” according to Piette.
This can be attributed to the number of pilots that simply don’t want to deal with the hectic skies of Oshkosh.
“A lot of pilots simply don’t want to deal with the hassle of flying into Oshkosh. It’s incredibly busy, and they would rather go to surrounding airports and drive.”
But it’s not just Green Bay that’s busy.
“Biggest arrival day in history,” remarked Appleton International Airport spokesperson Pat Tracey.
100 volunteers are helping out at Appleton International Airport, which is also seeing an increase in traffic.
“It’s all-hands-on-deck. We have summer help that comes in,” explained Tracey. “We have 100 volunteers that come out and direct the aircraft and service the aircraft.”
Appleton International Airport has started offering additional grass parking spaces and even offers camping spots.
