OCONTO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A convenience store clerk allegedly stole $68,365 worth of lottery tickets from the store she worked at.
60-year-old Linda Elliott faces six counts of theft in a business setting.
She was released on a signature bond after a court appearance earlier this month. She returns to court August 27th for a preliminary hearing.
According to the criminal complaint, the owner of the Fastop in Oconto Falls noticed his books weren’t balanced, due to issues with the lottery tickets.
According to the criminal complaint, upon initial questioning by police, Elliott said she paid for the tickets she took, including a $10,000 winner.
Eventually, however, she said “Fine, you want the truth? I did it. I took the tickets.”
“Linda said that she didn’t really think she was taking it directly from (the store’s owner). Linda said everyone else has nice things and she thought she should be able to have nice things too.”
Each count covers a different time period for the thefts, between April 1st, 2016, and February 3rd, 2017.
