GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – An intersection on Green Bay’s east side was closed for the most the day Thursday.
Wisconsin Public Service is made repairs to a utility pole at the corner of Nicolet Drive and East Shore Drive after it was hit by a car Wednesday night just after 10:00 p.m.
“When the driver hit the utility pole, it knocked the power out in that area,” said Captain Kevin Warych of the Green Bay Police Department.
The crash caused the car to start on fire.
“It sounded like a bomb, like a big BOOM!” according to Garcia Infante who witnessed the whole thing.
Warych said some quick thinking saved the man.
“Some good samaritans went to the driver’s aid and pulled him out of the vehicle.”
One of those men was DeShunn Echoles, who was at a gas station nearby when he noticed the fire.
“I panicked because the car had flipped over, so we kept pulling on the doors and eventually, the door came open so we got him out,” he said. “I did not want this car to blow up and for all of us to disappear.”
Police say the 62-year-old Florida man admitted to drinking. He faces an operated while intoxicated charge. He also suffered an arm injury in the crash.
