GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ)- The Green Bay Police Department is bringing back a position that has not been in place for over 20 years.
“It’s a Watershed Moment for Green Bay PD.”
Four officers were promoted to Sergeant on Monday.
Officers Mike Knetzger, Mike Luberda, Tom Denney and Brian Jordan were all sworn in Monday.
“This is a very historic day for the Green Bay Police Department because we have reimplemented Sergeants into the table of organization,” said Captain Kevin Warych. He says they are going back to the way it used to be before.
“They were removed because the chief at that time wanted to go in a different direction.”
Warych says the new Sergeants will be able to perform the duties of patrol officer and supervisor, which helps the service that they are able to provide to the community.
“Not only will sergeants be taking radio calls, but they will also be doing the coaching, mentoring and leading that is needed on daily shift duty.”
Lieutenants will still have their duties, but the Sergeants will serve as front line supervisors.
Chief Andrew Smith says those who make it through the application process will be sworn in on a rolling basis.
The department can have up to 15 officers in the rank of sergeant.
