GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ)- The newest members of the Green Bay Police Department were introduced to the public Wednesday.
Chief Andrew Smith says he double dog dares anyone to bring narcotics into Green Bay.
That is because the department has five new K9s on the job. Lt. Jody Buth says it is one of the largest K9 staff around.
“Having seven dogs total and six of them devoted to narcotics is huge.”
Neo, Bose, Drago, George, Pyro, Puma and Rocco, George and Neo were all at attention during the presentation. George and Neo are have been with the department the longest.
While replacing dogs is not common, recently Green Bay Police had some vacancies.
“Three of these K9’s were replacements for dogs that we had retired either due to age or medical condition.”
Just recently K-9’s have played a big role a few drug busts.
The department says at least one K-9 officer will be working every shift.
“There will be K-9 officers working around the clock,” Smith said. “We are able to help out other areas in the county if they need a dog when they don’t have any dogs available from their own agency.”
Much of the financial support for the dogs comes from the community donations.
Buth says the average cost for a canine is $15,000 dollars, and community support has played a large roll in the funding.
