SHIOCTON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK)- Sturgeon watching has become a large event in Shiocton.
The annual spawning run on the Wolf River, and it’s a celebration, draws thousands of people each year.
Cindy Hofacker of the Wolf River 4H Beaver’s Club says the club makes the most of it.
“This is our main fundraiser for the year. So we do this every single year, for over 25 years, we’ve been doing this. So, every time, the sturgeon come up to spawn, we come with our brats, and burgers, and our bake sale. And this is what we do.”
Sturgeon Guard volunteers say Bamboo Bend is a very popular spot to watch the spawning run.
“Last year when we did this, we did a couple of counts. We estimated there were probably about 3,000 people that came through that day. And right now, we’re thinking, that will probably be about that number again,” said Ron Gedemer, Sturgeon Guard.
Many longtime spawn watchers say it is still exciting every year.
“It’s amazing. Al these people, such a nice facility. It’s beautiful. They’ve done a nice job,” said Mary Gordee, Darboy.
“This is definitely an event for everyone, the whole community, and surrounding area. It’s proven by today. The shore is lined with school kids, a great event for everyone,” said Mike Gordee, Darboy.
Hofacker says the food ties the day all together as an event.
“People think it’s great. Because they smell the grill going, and they got to come and have a brat,” said Hofacker.
The sturgeon spawning run is about two weeks behind this year.
Experts suggest if you want to catch the action, you should make plans to head to Shiocton sooner, than later.
The spawning is expected to conclude at the end of the week in Shawano.
