GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ)- A Green Bay K-9 helped with a marijuana bust in Green Bay last weekend.
The incident stemmed from an unrelated domestic violence call that Officer Drann and Drago assisted with.
Police say the suspect fled, leading to police trying to track him down in surrounding neighborhoods.
Police Captain Kevin Warych says Drago was tracking the suspect but lost the scent. He says at the time time, they were notified of suspicious behavior coming from a residence nearby and notified of a stolen vehicle.
Warych says the officer and K-9 Drago went that direction.
“They believe that the suspect in the domestic violence, was possibly in the house where the suspicious behavior was taking place, so they investigated.”
K-9 Drago made a discovery, alerting officers to underneath a car.”
“They found 1.6 pounds of marijuana in vacuum sealed bags.”
Warych says the fact that there was that much marijuana, and how it was bagged, indicated possession with intent to deliver.
Police got permission to search the residence and found 66 grams of additional marijuana.
Warych says officers and Drago were in the right place at the right time to make this discovery.
“What officers learned is that the people discarded the marijuana under the car because they saw officers in the area.”
Later in the day, the domestic violence suspect was later taken into custody in Marathon County, WI, on his way back to Minnesota driving the stolen vehicle.
“We are very pleased with the progress of our new department K9 Officers and K9’s,” said Police Chief Andrew Smith. “This is the testament of the hard work of all the K9 Officers and K9’s. Just last Week K9 Officer Clark and K9 Roco located the escapee from Racine County. It is great to see the hard work of our officers and K9’s,” said Smith.
