APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – The Appleton Fire Department says a fire started Thursday afternoon on the 1500 block of N. Outagamie Street.
The fire started when someone put a candle on a stove burner while cooking dinner, and mistakenly turned the burner on.
That’s when the candle caught fire, spreading to the wall and cabinets around the stove.
Officials say the person tried to put the fire out with salt, unsuccessfully.
The homeowner then tried to use an old fire extinguisher, also unsuccessfully.
Two people were in the home at the time of the fire.
Police were able to get one of them out, while the other had already escaped by the time officials arrived on the scene.
No one was hurt in the fire.
