GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Spring is here and the peregrine falcons have returned to Wisconsin Public Service’s nest boxes.
Matt Cullen of WPS says they are featuring an uninterrupted live stream of the nests.
“New equipment from inside the nest boxes made that possible.”
Peregrine falcons were threatened by extinction. That’s when WPS decided to step in.
“This is part of our commitment to environmental stewardship,” Cullen said. “By installing these boxes on our power plants, we have helped a species that was nearly extinct, continue to recover and grow here.”
The efforts have been going on since 1993.
They saw the first of the birds hatch just three years later.
Since then 92 falcons have hatched in the WPS nest boxes, and that number is expected to grow as two eggs are already laid in the J.P Pulliam power plant nest box.
This April WPS will offer a “Name the Chicks” contest for elementary and middle school students to name a peregrine chick.
Cullen said last year, one of the birds was named “Morgan Freebird”
