GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A construction worker was injured while trying to put out a fire at a Grand Chute hotel Tuesday afternoon.
Crews were called to the Holiday Inn on S. Nicolet Road, near the Fox River Mall along I-41 just after 5:00 p.m.
Flames were visible outside the building, coming from a construction trash shoot on the sixth floor, being used during hotel renovations.
Several people were evacuated from the building and the fire was quickly extinguished.
The construction worker was transported to the hospital. His condition is unknown.
Hotel guest Chris Sabo telling FOX 11 he didn’t notice anything unusual inside the building before he was evacuated.
Guests were allowed back into the front lobby sometime before 6:00 p.m. but were only allowed to return to their rooms on floors one through five.
Grand Chute fire says damage was primarily confined to the exterior of the building with some damage to the windows.
Smoke and water damage also occurred on some floors.
Investigators say the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.
The estimated damage has not yet been determined.
Crews were on scene for about two and a half hours.
