GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A chance to learn about how to handle an active shooter situation in a church setting.
NWTC is holding a House of Worship Safety and Security Awareness Conference, which Training Officer Jason Weber says will cover a variety of elements of the horrific event.
“Detection, deterrence, what to do in the event that something happens, and then conversely: how do we overcome that. We’ll look at case studies of some recent events, crisis communication, how do we address that hostile person, how do we form a church security team.”
Weber notes the most important thing that someone can do in any active shooter situation.
“Be aware of your surroundings, and that’s going to help you with your options of run, hide, or fight.”
He says it’s important for ushers or greeters at churches to pay attention to what’s going on and react to anything that appears to be suspicious.
Weber explains one of the biggest mistakes people can make.
“They want to deny. They don’t want to believe that what is happening, is happening. You’ve gotta recognize that very quick.”
Weber says it costs $50 to participate in the two-day seminar, which will be held February 20-21. Anyone interested can call 920-498-7174 or click here to learn more.
