APPLETON, WI (WTAQ)- One Appleton neighborhood spent its Wednesday dealing with the repercussions of an unfortunate early morning happening.
City Operations Supervisor Eric Cardew says several homes sustained water damage, after a water main broke in the east side neighborhood of East Crestview Drive and North Linden Lane.
“An 8″ water main at about 70 PSI (pounds per square inch), that’s a lot of water in a hurry.”
Cardew says it took six hours to repair, noting the challenge presented by the high-pressured line allowing water to flow into the sewage system.
“Typically, a water main break will surface. In this particular case, it entered the sewer: the easiest path it could go.”
Cardew says this sort of happening is not horribly uncommon.
“More prevalent in the winter time. We average around 90 main breaks a year.”
Kim Carney lives off of North Linden Lane, finding her basement flooded after fire officials pounded on her door around 12:30 am Wednesday.
“I’m not looking forward to having to go through all of my stuff and say ‘yeah, this had sentimental value, and you can’t have it anymore.’”
No word on what the caused the break.
