KEWAUNEE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ)- Upcoming warm temperatures are not doing any favors for snowmobilers in Kewaunee County
As of Thursday afternoon, trails in Kewaunee County are closed, just 48 hours after they opened for the season.
Recreation Director Dave Myers said that is not unusual, and they are at the mercy of mother nature.
“We have had what we call a “January Thaw”, which the warm week and the rain really hurt the base, then we got more snow, and now we are warming up again.”
Myers said it is disappointing for snow enthusiasts, but this is not the worse year weather wise
“We had a year where we were not open at all, and last year I believe we were only open for a week.”
Myers says he meets with the six snowmobile club presidents on a regular basis during the winter.
“We hash out what we are going do and make decisions from there.”
With colder temperatures expected this weekend, Meyers hopes the trails can be open again early next week.
Myer says even when the weather is favorable, they still need time to smooth out the trails.
