FRANKLIN, WI (WTAQ) – The investigation into Monday night’s fatal officer-involved shooting in Kewaunee County continues.
Department of Justice spokesman Johnny Koremenos shares his take on what happened along Highway AB in the Town of Franklin.
“When the deputies arrived, they encountered a male suspect who had a knife, threatening a woman and some of the folks who live nearby. Despite deputies demanding him drop his weapon, the deputies were put in danger by this individual and were forced to use deadly force.”
Since the unnamed deputy shot and killed 22-year-old Kyle Whitmire, Koremenos notes state officials are handling the investigation and will turn their findings over to county prosecutors.
“The D.A. will review the information within the reports to determine whether or not the shooting officer was justified.”
The deputy’s name could be released in the coming days. That person remains on paid administrative leave as the investigation unfolds.
