GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – He might be smaller and furrier than most officers on the force but Yukon did his job well.
The 11-year-old German Shepard K-9 retired on Friday from the Green Bay Police Department.
He joined the force back in 2009 and gave the best of his life serving the people of Green Bay.
His handler for the past 5 years, Officer Dave Ekland, says it won’t be the same without him.
“It’s going to be quite an adjustment, especially in the car and getting ready for work.”
The pooch was trained in narcotics detection and was deployed countless times helping officers in the seizure of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
One of his biggest finds was back in November of 2016 after assisting drug agents.
“Yukon located 9 pounds of marijuana hid in a vehicle.”
Eklund says medical issues has forced his partner into retirement.
Yukon will now spend the rest of his years at Eklund’s home being pampered with lots of treats and daily walks.
Eklund won’t be too far behind his K-9 pal, as he retires next year.
Chief Andrew Smith says the department will be looking for a replacement for Yukon which will cost around $12,000.
