GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A black bear has been spotted three times this week in a west side Green Bay neighborhood.
All three instances happened Tuesday in the area of Lombardi Middle School.
- Behind Lombardi Middle School on South Point Road at 10:10 am
- In the 2800 block of Lobelia Court at 6:56 pm
- In the 2600 block of West Point Road at 8:46 pm
DNR Wildlife Biologist Josh Martinez says “I get bear reports in Brown County suburban areas probably once every couple of months. It’s not really that uncommon to happen.”
Martinez has an idea where the bear might have been prior to arriving in the residential neighborhood.
“My guess is it’s going to have come from the west in Brown County. There’s a lot more farmland, country, and forest cover out to the west of the City of Green Bay.”
Authorities say the bear appears to be afraid of humans and has not been seen with any cubs.
“They don’t pose any threat to people. The only time they’re going to pose any threat to anyone is if anybody shows any sort of aggression toward that animal, corners the animal.”
Martinez has some advice for residents when a bear is spotted in their neighborhood.
“First thing you should do is make sure you pull down your bird feeders, bring in dog food or cat food at night, don’t leave out food sources, that just attracts them there more.”
Martinez asks anyone who spots the bear to call the DNR Call Center at 1-888-936-7463. If the bear is showing aggression, he urges people to call 911.
