CASSVILLE, WI (WSAU) Cleanup is underway after heavy rains last week caused flooding in Grant County.
Governor Scott Walker toured Cassville yesterday to meet with families who lost their homes. Wisconsin Emergency Management says over a dozen homes were either destroyed or damaged in the floods caused by storms Friday night.
The governor visited the Cassville fire station, which is being used as a Red Cross shelter and a staging area for volunteers. He said the state will apply for federal assistance, but is not sure the damage will qualify for funding: “It is an extremely high bar, and so we encourage folks to document as much as possible whether it’s personal property, commercial property or whether it’s public assets, all those things are criteria when it comes to federal assistance.”
State officials say flooding earlier this month in southern Wisconsin did an additional $8.3-million dollars in damage in Kenosha, Racine, and Walworth counties. Wisconsin Emergency Management officials note a total of four homes were destroyed in those areas. Racine County bore the brunt of infrastructure damage at over $3.9-million in damage.
A State of Emergency was declared by Governor Walker for 17 counties as a result of the flooding July 21 and 22, triggered by up to ten inches of rain that fell in only a few hours.
