OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) – A fire that damaged a house in Oshkosh was started by a 5-year-old child playing with a lighter.
Firefighters say they were called to 317 W. 6th Ave. just after 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Crews reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the house.
They were able to get the fire under control quickly, but the house had extensive smoke and heat damage.
Eight people were home at the time and all made it out safely.
One man was treated at the scene for a hand injury. No other injuries were reported.
The Red Cross is helping the family.
The Oshkosh Fire Department reminds parents to store matches and lighters so children cannot get them.
Children can be enrolled in the department’s Juvenile Fire Safety Program.
