FOND DU LAC (WLUK) — At 3:19 a.m. on December 25, Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue responded to a duplex basement fire that happened at 472 South Park Avenue.
The duplex housed tenants on the second floor and the owner on the first floor.
A 9-year-old boy was sleeping on the first floor living room couch when he awoke and saw smoke. He quickly told his parents and all three got out safely. The second floor tenants were not home at the time of the fire.
“This could have been a disastrous situation if the 9-year-old had not awakened,” said Assistant Chief Steve Beer. “I would consider him a true hero in this situation.”
No working smoke detectors were found in the basement where the fire occurred or on the first floor of the duplex.
Fire crews were able to put out the fire in the basement and stayed at the scene for over an hour.
Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue uses this incident as a reminder to everyone that it is important to make sure homes and businesses have working smoke detectors.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation
